If I know a labor is brewing and I’m expecting that midnight call, I have my doula bag stocked, packed, and by the door. My clean outfit is folded and at the ready, my coffee is prepared for a quick brew, and in the fridge is a grab-and-go snack for the road (so I am already fueled when I arrive to meet you). My phone ringer is on, volume maxed, and I’ve double checked (ok, more like quadruple checked... at least) that its really on and the volume really is maxed. You doulas know exactly what I am talking about 😉

There are a few necessities I prioritize before running out the door so that I can show up as my best self to serve you:

🚿 a shower- because I don’t know when my next one will be and I want to start fresh!

☕️ coffee and quick meal- because I want to be alert and energized when I show up for you.

🧘‍♀️ a few slow, deep breaths- because I want to be grounded and calm when I enter your space.

Every single invitation to the birth space is exciting! I look forward to each one of my doula families ringing my phone- whether its 2pm or 2am- because I know their adventure has begun and I get to witness another family write their story together.

Shake it (gently), baby!

Rhythmic jiggling of the hips helps release tension in the pelvic fascia and invites length in the surrounding muscles. It’s a simple, relaxing way to comfort mom, bring balance to her body, and make space for baby to find their best position.

We can Shake the Apples with a rebozo or our hands, whatever mom finds most comfortable. Gentle movement in this way for 3-4 minutes (or longer if desired) promotes relaxation, peace, connection, and balance. It’s easy, playful (I call it a partner favorite 😉), and can be deeply effective.

Around here we like to think of labor flow as a state of down-regulation. Your body knows how to birth, but a busy mind can complicate the labor process and increase negative (aka “painful”) sensations in labor.

A calm nervous system supports helpful hormone production (think oxytocin) which allows for a smoother, quicker progression of labor and birth. And round it goes.

Here are a few signs someone might be out of their labor flow and quick ways to help them release, relax, and flow with it.

❌raised shoulders and clenched fists

❌tension in the face and jaw

❌negative self-talk or unhelpful language

❌talking during contractions

❌disregulated breathing

Try to encourage the person in labor to release any tension in their body. Common areas where tension seems to manifest is in the forehead, face, jaw, and shoulders. Offer gentle reminders to release and let tension melt away.

Talking, and language in general, turns on our thinking brain and can pull us out of flow. Encourage inward attention and breath work (like 3D breathing) or vocalization to stay grounded, calm, and feel in control of the things we can control. If we are talking to the person in labor, let’s use positive affirmations, encouragement, and language they have identified as helpful to help them surrender further into their flow.

Together we will review the stages and phases of labor and birth, practice natural comfort techniques, discuss informed consent and navigating changes to our plan (aka medical inductions, interventions, and medical pain management options), and learn how to have an easeful transition into the immediate postpartum period, including body care, newborn care, and breastfeeding.

Classes are held in 2.5 hour sessions, 1 evening per week for 4 weeks. You will receive a digital class workbook and access to an exclusive webpage packed with additional resources.

1️⃣ Doula
Having a doula with you during pregnancy and labor is proven by evidence to help you avoid unnecessary interventions, reduce the chances of a cesarean birth, and increase the likelihood of a positive experience.

2️⃣ Affirmation Cards
Language is powerful! Encouragement and simple reminders that send messages of peace and comfort help us stay present, focused, and calm. When our minds are at peace and we feel grounded, we tap into a state of flow—allowing labor to progress more easily. I like to call affirmation cards “cue cards for partners” because they’re great reminders for your support team of what you want to hear during labor. 😉

3️⃣ Mood Lighting
One of the easiest ways to encourage labor flow is by turning the lights down. Dim lighting helps quiet the thinking brain, making it easier to surrender to the moment. Being in your birthing body—without overcomplicating things with critical thinking—can help labor progress more quickly and with greater ease.

Staying hydrated is absolutely essential for labor to progress. It can be surprising how quickly dehydration can set in during labor. Have electrolytes on hand—they’ll fuel your body much more effectively than plain water, especially when you’re feeling nauseous and can’t imagine eating. Choose a water bottle with a straw, and remind your partner to encourage you to sip between every contraction.

5️⃣ Snacks
If you want to be able to put energy out, you need energy going in. Keep easy-to-digest snacks on hand for those moments when you do feel like eating during labor. Great options include fresh or dried fruit, protein bars, bone broth, beef sticks, fruit snacks, applesauce pouches, and honey sticks—anything quick and nourishing that’s easy on the tummy.

The sacral press is an excellent counter pressure technique for labor that provides comforting touch with the added benefit of helping to create more space for your baby as they navigate through the pelvis. It’s working smarter, not harder!

When baby is higher in the pelvis (in the inlet) we can help by placing our hand on mom’s sacrum and floating our fingers towards mom’s booty, then press hand with shifting the weight on the sacrum. This can help the sacrum counternutate and create space in the pelvic inlet. I am more likely to use this technique during early and active labor.

When baby is lower in the pelvis (in the outlet) we can switch the direction of our fingers- now floating towards mom’s low back- and rock the sacrum into more of an untucked position. This helps create space for baby in the pelvic outlet. I tend to use this comfort option during late transition and maybe even pushing. And trust me, it works!

Meet one of my favorite movements for labor and birth- the Glute Scoot!

The glute scoot is a simple (maybe slightly silly) movement that can be surprisingly effective at helping to balance the pelvis and encourage baby to drop deeper into the pelvis. It works by releasing the back muscle (called the QL) which can get really tight in pregnancy, causing discomfort, misalignment, and compensations.

Although you can do it anytime in pregnancy or labor, you may want to get your glute scoot on if:
💛 you’re experiencing prodromal labor
💛 you are moving close to or past your estimated due date
💛you are in active labor but your baby is still high

It can be tricky to decipher all the physical and emotional shifts that start as we near the end of pregnancy. One that oftentimes trips us up is something called Braxton Hicks contractions. These are uterine contractions that usually show up in the third trimester, although some people may experience them in the second trimester as well. They can be a way for your body to prepare for labor and, as I like to say, it’s your body’s way of “warming up” or practicing before the big day. These contractions may help tone your uterus for labor, but they do not result in birth.

So, how do we know if what we are feeling is Braxton Hicks contractions or early labor?

Braxton Hicks:
➡️ Feel like mild to moderate tightening in the belly. The sensations are more surface-level, not deep into the pelvis.
➡️ Are usually irregular, infrequent, and don’t get stronger over time.
➡️ May go away with rest, hydration, or a change in position or activity.

Early labor contractions:
➡️ develop a rhythm and progressively grow stronger and closer together
➡️ don’t go away with rest, hydration, or a change in position or activity.

It is totally normal to experience Braxton Hicks during your pregnancy and also normal to not experience them, so no need to worry either way! Just remember to keep up that hydration, rest when your body asks for it, and trust that your body and your baby know what to do 💛

Hi, I’m Shalin, experienced birth doula, childbirth educator, doula mentor, and the founder of Kindred Childbirth Collective. I am so happy you’re here!

I firmly believe there is no one “right” way to birth, and that the best way to birth is with education and support, surrounded by the people you trust, and in an environment that makes you feel safe. My goal is to ensure you feel informed, loved, and encouraged no matter where, how, or with whom you choose to birth.

This is your baby, your story, and I have called in a village of the best care providers around to cheer you on as you embark on the most transformative journey of your life!

A few other things about me:

💥 I am a mom of 2 little ones, my first I birthed in a hospital and second I welcomed at home.

💥 I am married to a wonderful, supportive man who has been my biggest cheerleader in this passion project some call “work”

💥 I live in Meadow Vista, CA. It’s a tiny, one-stoplight town and I absolutely adore it. Driving home feels like I am going on vacation. My home is truly my haven.

💥 Our family has 6 chickens, a cat, and my son has a pet slug named Flash (yep, you read that right 🤣)

💥 Sourdough bread is one of the few things I know how to bake, and I bake A LOT of it #cantstopwontstop

💥 Coffee.

💥 Authenticity is important to me. If you are with me, here or in real life, you are getting the real Shalin. No act. No filter. I invite you to show up as yourself, too. This is life, not a stage.

💥 I love watching fellow doulas thrive doing what they love. My work mentoring doulas is an extension of my love for supporting families and those who serve them. I hope to help new doulas become confident, skilled leaders who will come alongside me as we make birth a safer, more positive experience for parents and their babies.
