These posts are well overdue, but I found myself still in the slow down, soaking in the shared energy from our holiday gathering. I didn’t want to rush to social media, and so I didn’t.

A cacao ceremony as a reminder that less can be more, and that it’s ok to slow down, sip mindfully, and reconnect with ourselves and our community. An invitation to co-regulate with our sisters and the changing season. An opportunity to pause, if only for a few moments, amidst the holiday hustle.

✨Meet Lauren✨

Lauren is a certified postpartum doula and educator specializing in Ayurvedic and holistic postpartum care. She also happens to be one of our wonderful postpartum doula mentors in our Kindred Mentorship Program.

In her teachings, Lauren brings a compassionate, global approach that honors both the physical and emotional journey. Although Lauren participates in learning sessions for both of our doula programs, a majority of her time is spent within our Postpartum Doula Program ✨

During your time with Lauren, you will explore global postpartum care practices, traditions around the world, day vs nighttime postpartum care, diversification of services, practice models, postpartum mental health, and more.

As a mother of two, Lauren is intimately aware of the joys and challenges that come with the postpartum period. Her own journey inspired her to become a passionate advocate for mothers, providing them with the support and care they truly deserve during this tender time. Her journey into postpartum care has been enriched by the wisdom of ancient traditions, including Ayurvedic practices and other nurturing techniques, and she brings this knowledge into her doula practice as well as into her teachings with the Kindred Mentorship Program.

Lauren brings a grounded, knowledgable presence to our leadership team. We are grateful to have her with us and can’t wait for you to meet her in both our birth and postpartum programs!

In her teachings, Lauren brings a compassionate, global approach that honors both the physical and emotional journey. Although Lauren participates in learning sessions for both of our doula programs, a majority of her time is spent within our Postpartum Doula Program ✨

During your time with Lauren, you will explore global postpartum care practices, traditions around the world, day vs nighttime postpartum care, diversification of services, practice models, postpartum mental health, and more.

As a mother of two, Lauren is intimately aware of the joys and challenges that come with the postpartum period. Her own journey inspired her to become a passionate advocate for mothers, providing them with the support and care they truly deserve during this tender time. Her journey into postpartum care has been enriched by the wisdom of ancient traditions, including Ayurvedic practices and other nurturing techniques, and she brings this knowledge into her doula practice as well as into her teachings with the Kindred Mentorship Program.

Lauren brings a grounded, knowledgable presence to our leadership team. We are grateful to have her with us and can’t wait for you to meet her in both our birth and postpartum programs!

I act the stages out for every single series and I can’t tell you how many people have come back to me after having their baby (dad’s especially) to say how helpful it was having a preview of what to expect!

Actual contraction length is longer: early labor ~20-45 seconds, active ~60 seconds, and transition ~90 seconds.

Vocalization might be one of your greatest tools in labor. As labor intensifies the sounds we make do, too. Here is what we typically see during labor:

💚 Early labor- sh!t’s getting real! 🥳
Focused breathing, exploring rhythmic movements, slowly entering labor flow (primal brain) but still being pulled into our thinking brain (the part of your brain that isn’t helpful for labor progress).
🔎Other things you’ll notice as a birth detective- I’m smiling, eyes open, engaging outward, vertical, and chatty between contractions.

💛Active labor- sh!t’s getting REALLY real! 😳
Deep vocalization, rhythmic movements back and forth or side to side, finding rituals to help us cope, fully entered labor flow state (as long as we are in a supportive environment with supportive team).
🔎Other things you’ll notice as a birth detective- I’m no longer smiling, eyes are closed, limited outward engagement, moving towards horizontal, and not chatty between contractions.

❤️ Transition- oh sh!t, what have I done?! 😵‍💫
Powerful, loud vocalization, continued rhythmic and intuitive movements, deep into coping rituals and flow state.
🔎Other things you’ll notice as a birth detective- eyes remain closed continuously, minimal or no outward engagement, horizontal or as close to the ground as possible, limited or no talking between contractions, some women may even appear to be in a trance-like state or fall asleep between contractions.

There are the long drives home in the middle of the night, hands still shaking from adrenaline, wondering if I said the right thing, or too much, or maybe I should have said more.

There are the births that stretch on for days—where I’m holding space and remaining steady through pain, fear, power, and transformation.

There’s no script for this work.
Every birth is different.
Every baby is different.
Every family is different.
And sometimes, it all feels impossible to carry alone.

That’s why having a mentor—someone to call from the hospital lobby at 3 a.m. in whispered tears (this happens to ALL of us if we do this work long enough),

or text for suggestions and encouragement in the middle of a difficult birth,

or to debrief with the next day asking “Was that normal? Was I enough? What could I have done differently”— makes all the difference.

Did you know your amazing sacrum has the ability to move forward and backward, directly impacting the space available for your baby as they travel through your pelvis?

A sticky, immobile pelvis and sacrum = limited movement = potentially reduced space for baby and slower labor progress.

Practicing tucking and untucking your pelvis helps your body access a greater range of motion during pregnancy and birth. Instead of cat/cow (which is initiated by the spine and doesn’t effectively mobilize the sacrum), try this:

1. Find a neutral pelvis on hands and knees — this is where you don’t feel yourself in a tucked or untucked tilt.

2. Tuck your pelvis by bringing your pubic bone toward your nose. Pause just before your back begins to arch — this might be your current end range of the tuck, for now.

3. Slowly untuck your pelvis by bringing your sitz bones toward the sky. Pause when you feel your spine start to curve (we often use our back to compensate for limited pelvic mobility in this movement).

Sacral mobility is key to optimizing your birth experience. Practice this regularly and continue to explore greater ranges of motion as you prepare for birth.

You just had a baby—congrats! Now let’s meet your new ride-or-die: the three-tired rolling cart of glory.

This was one of the best things I did for myself postpartum (but still takes a major backseat to my number one thing- postpartum doulas @tiffanisdoulaservices and @ashlee.sakaishi.wilkin 😍)

While I was freshly postpartum one of these bad boys became my new bedside table. Here’s how I stocked mine:

💗 Top tier – mom gear:
water bottle, allllll the snacks, chapstick, hair ties, book, phone charger, tissues, eye drops, @milkmoonherbs tinctures, and whatever else I needed within arms reach.

🧷 Middle tier – supplies for my new mini boss:
diapers, wipes, diaper balm, tiny outfits she immediately pooped on, burp cloths, etc.

🥛Bottom tier – breastfeeding survival stuff: breast pads, clean shirt for me, nipple balm, pump supplies, pads, and supplements.

I attached a little trash bucket to the side, too.

Sensing my breastfeeding days are coming to an end, I can’t help but reflect on the amount of time, energy, and love we’ve spent nourishing each other (because believe me, these relationships have been reciprocal in many ways).

I’ve breastfed for a combined six years plus some, through highs and lows, with endless love.
 First came my boy, the start was easy, the latch was strong, the milk flowed freely.
 Then came my girl, a firey soul, our start was rough, but we wouldn’t let go.

We nursed through tears and pain and doubt, we found our rhythm, and (with help) sorted things out.

I’ve nursed my babies through seemingly endless nights, while stars kept watch and moon gave light.

We’ve nursed in gondolas, cars, trains, and planes, in parking lots, hospital beds, and quaint cafes.

We’ve nursed by mountains, streams, and lakes, on camping trips and road trip breaks.

These two little souls, my body fed. I’ll never regret all this time, well spent.

Ok, get back here so I can smell that intoxicating head of yours again 😌

Focus on these five first and you’ll be in the best position to have a perfectly balanced milk supply and a beautiful breastfeeding journey. 👩🏻‍🍳💋

✺ Education. Take a prenatal breastfeeding class. Learn how your body makes milk and what to expect when feeding a newborn. Having realistic expectations of what the early days and weeks look like can help you prepare for what’s ahead and navigate the beginning with knowledge and confidence.
✺ Skin-to-skin for the win! Direct skin contact with your baby can boost your milk supply, even when baby isn’t actively feeding! It also protects baby, promotes bonding, and makes it really easy to smell your baby’s head as often as you want 😌😘
✺ Feed your baby. Milk-making is a demand and supply system (your baby demands and you supply). Responsive feeding (aka feeding on demand) is the best way to build and protect a healthy supply.
✺ Nourish yourself. Eat and stay hydrated. You can’t pour from an empty….breast…right? You need energy to make milk, my friend, and when you’re lactating you need even more calories than you would otherwise.
✺ Seek support. Have your local IBCLC or lactation specialist on speed dial so if the need arises (and it just might) you’re connected. Heck, many people meet with a lactation consult during pregnancy to lay out a breastfeeding plan, especially those who anticipate challenges due to mental or physical/medical history concerns. It’s never too soon to seek support, but there are times it can be too late. Don’t wait- set yourself up for success 💛

Screening for gestational diabetes is usually offered between 24-28 weeks of pregnancy in the form of glucose testing. The initial step, a one-hour glucose test, involves drinking a 50-gram glucose solution and having blood drawn one hour later. If this result exceeds a certain threshold, a 100-gram oral glucose tolerance test is recommended, typically with blood draws at one, two, and three hours, to confirm or rule out GDM.

If you know me you know that I am determined to make sure all families know their options, and screening for GDM is no exception. So, what are your options?

💧50-gram, one-hour Glucola (or similar) test. Drink a sweet solution at the lab and test your blood sugar one hour later.
🧃Glucola alternatives. Ask about The Fresh Test—a cleaner, more natural glucose drink—or food-based alternatives (like jelly beans or juice). These may or may not be accepted by your care provider, so you’ll want to discuss this with them.
☝🏻Home Glucose Monitors. Avoid the sugary drinks and lab time by tracking your blood sugar at home with a glucometer. This may be especially beneficial if prefer to avoid standard testing or want to gather more information as to how your body responds to particular foods and meal times.
⚪️ Continuous Glucose Monitor. Some providers now offer wearable glucose monitors that provide real-time tracking over several days. This can be a great option for those wanting more insight and personalized data or those with prior GD.

Screening for gestational diabetes is usually offered between 24-28 weeks of pregnancy in the form of glucose testing. The initial step, a one-hour glucose test, involves drinking a 50-gram glucose solution and having blood drawn one hour later. If this result exceeds a certain threshold, a 100-gram oral glucose tolerance test is recommended, typically with blood draws at one, two, and three hours, to confirm or rule out GDM.

If you know me you know that I am determined to make sure all families know their options, and screening for GDM is no exception. So, what are your options?

💧50-gram, one-hour Glucola (or similar) test. Drink a sweet solution at the lab and test your blood sugar one hour later.
🧃Glucola alternatives. Ask about The Fresh Test—a cleaner, more natural glucose drink—or food-based alternatives (like jelly beans or juice). These may or may not be accepted by your care provider, so you’ll want to discuss this with them.
☝🏻Home Glucose Monitors. Avoid the sugary drinks and lab time by tracking your blood sugar at home with a glucometer. This may be especially beneficial if prefer to avoid standard testing or want to gather more information as to how your body responds to particular foods and meal times.
⚪️ Continuous Glucose Monitor. Some providers now offer wearable glucose monitors that provide real-time tracking over several days. This can be a great option for those wanting more insight and personalized data or those with prior GD.
